Modi Tenders his resignation to President Murmu

On June 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Murmu to submit his resignation along with that of the Union Council of Ministers. This move follows the Union Cabinet’s recommendation to dissolve the 17th Lok Sabha. According to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhawan, Modi, and his ministers will stay in their roles until the new government is established, as requested by President. The current Lok Sabha’s term concludes on June 16.

Election Results and Formation of the New Government

This development follows the announcement of the results for all 543 seats by the Election Commission of India earlier today. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not secure enough seats for an outright majority in the Lok Sabha. As a result, the BJP will need to partner with its allies to form the next government.

BJP Secures 240 Seats, Relies on NDA Allies

The BJP secured 240 seats, falling short of the 272 needed for a majority. In response, the party has convened a meeting with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parties in New Delhi today. With the seats won by its allies, the NDA has achieved a comfortable majority.

INDIA Bloc Plans Next Steps

Meanwhile, the Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, which won over 200 seats, also did not cross the majority mark. The bloc has scheduled a meeting today to strategize its next moves.
