In a tragic accident near New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal, the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express collided with a goods train close to Rangapani station, approximately seven kilometers away. The collision resulted in the derailment of two rear compartments, leading to eight fatalities and leaving at least 60 individuals injured.

Prime Minister’s Announcement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased in the railway mishap. This gesture aims to support the families during this difficult time. Additionally, Rs. 50,000 will be provided to each injured person to aid in their recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

Presidential Condolences

President Droupadi Murmu expressed heartfelt condolences and prayers for the families who lost their loved ones in the accident. She also extended wishes for a swift recovery to those injured in the tragic incident.

In a post on social media, she stated, “I am shocked to learn about a tragic train accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district,” mentioning that further details are awaited. Emergency response teams, including doctors and disaster units, have been dispatched to the site.

Heavy rainfall affected the Rescue operation

Heavy rainfall since this morning in Siliguri has affected the rescue operation. The train was en route from Agartala to Sealdah when the accident occurred around 9 am. Consequently, long-distance train services have been temporarily halted.

The collision and subsequent derailment have prompted authorities to temporarily suspend long-distance train services in the region, as safety assessments and recovery operations progress.
