The number of fatalities in the UP Hathras stampede has tragically climbed to 121. Many victims succumbed to suffocation following a chaotic stampede during the wrap-up of a ‘Satsang’ at Phulrai village near the Mandi area of Sikandrarau in Hathras. On Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the event organizers, where the stampede led to the loss of at least 121 lives.

Organizers Under Scrutiny, But Not All

Interestingly, the FIR does not accuse Baba Narayan Hari, also known as Saakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba.

UP Hathras stampede: Details on the Casualties

The official death toll from the Hathras stampede is now at 116, with victims primarily dying from suffocation when the stampede erupted during the end of a ‘Satsang’ at Phulrai village. Satsangs are Hindu religious gatherings, typically held overnight.

“Etah Hospital has received twenty-seven bodies. Among the deceased are 23 women, three children, and one man,” reported Rajesh Kumar Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah.

Cause of the Stampede

According to Ashish Kumar, the SHO of Sikandara Rao police station, the stampede was likely triggered by overcrowding.

Government’s Response

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has extended his condolences to the bereaved families. He has directed officials to promptly visit the accident site and implement relief measures.
