Legendary West Indies fast bowler Sir Curtly Ambrose has placed Virat Kohli in the same elite category as Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, recognizing his ability to excel in any era of cricket. Kohli, often compared to Tendulkar as India’s greatest batsman, is steadily approaching Tendulkar’s record for the most international centuries.

Kohli’s Record-Breaking Journey

Kohli has achieved 80 international centuries, just 20 short of Tendulkar’s unparalleled 100 centuries. At 35, Kohli recently surpassed Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries by hitting his 50th against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023.

Curtly Ambrose’s Perspective

Despite the frequent comparisons, Ambrose avoids directly comparing Kohli with Tendulkar, emphasizing the difficulty in comparing players from different eras. However, he confidently states that Kohli’s talent would allow him to dominate in any era, similar to Tendulkar and Ponting.

Ambrose’s Admiration

“Virat Kohli, the great man, is someone who I admire and love watching. Don’t ask me to compare him with Sachin. I know he’s a great player. People like to compare different eras, but I don’t. I can say that when I judge great batsmen like Kohli, I consider if they could succeed in any era. I believe Kohli would have done well in my era or before, making him a great player. The same goes for Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting,” said Ambrose in an interview with Sports Tak.

The Greatness Factor

Ambrose explained that the hallmark of great players is their ability to excel regardless of the era they play in. This belief underscores why he holds Kohli, Tendulkar, and Ponting in such high regard.

By recognizing Kohli’s prowess and ability to adapt and succeed, Ambrose highlights why Kohli belongs among cricket’s all-time greats.
